Looks Different? Smells Different?

You’ve received another order from us but when pouring your Black Seed Oil from the bottle it’s seemingly a different colour, tastes more or less pungent, or even smells a little different from last time…

Taste and smell are both subjective. Colour – well, that can easily differ based on different lighting conditions and angles, and also due to the consistency of the oil itself.

We could just leave it at that, but we won’t because you’re right… sometimes a bottle of our Black Seed Oil will look, smell, or taste different from a previous bottle.

This is very normal – but we understand why it may confuse some customers…

Firstly – our Black Seed Oils are all 100% Pure & Unfiltered. Due to this, no two bottles of oil will be the exact same – even bottles of the same strength and poured from the same batch.

If you’ve stocked up on bottled oil from us and leave a bottle sitting upright for a few months, weeks or sometimes even days; look closely and you’ll usually see a darker colour towards the bottom of the bottle. This is usually more noticeable in the 500ml bottles.

To help you better understand why, let’s take a look at a typical process (this is of course a shortened version):

  • To produce our oils we are using our own blend of seeds from various countries around the world. This varies throughout the course of the year.
  • Seeds go in to our hopper and are cold-pressed to extract the oil. Seeds go in one end and oil comes out of the other.
  • Our oil is pressed into 100 Litre and/or 25 Litre drums.
  • Any seed particles that remain in the oil are left untouched – we do not further filter our oils.
  • Almost instantly, any seed remnants within the oil will start to fall to the bottom of the drum.
  • When a drum is hooked up to our bottle-filling machines it will draw out oil through a hose, into the filling machine and then into a bottle.
  • Seed particles within the oil will never be evenly-distributed, since they will always fall to the bottom.

Each bottle of oil may therefore differ somewhat in regards to taste, colour and even consistency.
One bottle may contain lots of seed remnants whereas another bottle may contain very little. This can affect taste, colour and the consistency of the oil.

Does this matter?

No. There are many myths in regards to taste, smells and colour being the deciding factors on whether or not an oil is ‘strong’. Much like the myth of ‘Black Seed Oil from X (country) is the strongest’ – it’s not.

If only it was that simple. Whilst factors such as taste, smell, and colour can give some indication as to the quality of an oil, they are by no means an accurate measurement of strength.

Whilst we pride ourselves on producing 100% Pure & Natural Black Seed Oils; post-production we turn to science simply because this is a much more accurate way of determining the quality & strength of the oils produced…

We test every batch of oil that we produce and categorise our oils based on Volatile Oil Content (often referred to as VOC throughout our website). For this reason seed remnants do not play a part in establishing the strength of our oils.

Our oils will always contain the minimum advertised VOC.

Capsule colour

Another thing to consider if you notice a difference in colour, particularly when looking at our Black Seed Oil Capsules is that the oil is hidden behind a wall – a wall in the form of the Capsule shell.

Think of it as looking at a subject through a pair of tinted sunglasses VS not wearing any.

The Capsule shell will distort light, making it is impossible to grasp a true sense of the colour of the oil within. If you move the capsule around into different positions in a room, or look at the capsule from different angles, you will notice that the Capsule content colour will change. Viewing angles and lighting conditions can create a real false sense of colour in this instance.

NOTE: If you purchased Black Seed Oil Capsules from us prior to September 2021, our Capsule shells at the time were made from (Halal) Beef/Bovine Gelatin. Capsules purchased after this date have been using our newly-developed Vegan-friendly Capsule shells*. The new Vegan Capsule shells are considerably lighter in colour, and so if compare the old Capsules and our new Capsules side-by-side, depending on lighting conditions you should notice that the new Capsules appear much lighter in colour. The contents within the Capsule shells remains the same — we merely made the change from Beef Gelatin shells to Vegan-friendly shells because there was much demand from customers.

*Although we made the changeover in September 2021, it is possible that you may have purchased the older-style Capsules from us after this date, whilst remaining ‘old stock’ was run down. It would have been made clear at the time of purchase if you were purchasing the older Capsules. If you’re unsure you can check the ingredients section of your packaging.
